Dubai Healthcare City (DHCC), Dubai, United Arab Emirates was created by the Government of Dubai, United Arab Emirates with the objective of becoming, by 2010, a globally acknowledged location of choice for health care and a center of excellence for specialist medical services, medical education, and life science research. Dubai is investing in the infrastructure development of approximately four million square feet of space to establish regional medical care and wellness facilities, including academic tertiary care and specialty referral hospitals, primary and secondary care centers, educational facilities, basic and clinical research facilities, and commercial biotechnology research and development facilities. HMI, as DHCC's key strategic collaborator, has been working with DHCC to develop DHCC's capabilities and service offerings in the areas of medical education, health care delivery, and research. HMI has created a Dubai-based team to help carry out the terms of the partnership and ensure that objectives are met.

Medical Education
Among the partnership's most important developments is the design and launch of the Harvard Medical School Dubai Center (HMSDC). The HMSDC, established in May 2004, will house the Institute for Postgraduate Education and Research, and be the center of DHCC's education activities. Currently, through the HMSDC, HMI fosters the development of postgraduate and continuing medical education (CME) programs designed to train specialty physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals, and bring updated knowledge and practices to the entire region. Since the inception of the DHCC-HMI partnership, the partners have teamed to organize CME programs focused on diabetes, musculoskeletal health and sports medicine, respiratory medicine, and large-scale, multidisciplinary programs on primary care issues of particular regional concern.

Quality
To ensure that patient care and education services provided by DHCC meet international standards of excellence, HMI and DHCC have established the Center for Healthcare Planning and Quality (CPQ). The overarching goal of the CPQ is to oversee health care quality and accreditation within DHCC -- across all structures and processes including, facilities, education, and patient care, and aligned with international standards of excellence -- and ensure that the services provided through DHCC are commensurate with regional demand.

Research
DHCC is also committed to establishing itself as a center for research and scientific discovery. To this end DHCC and HMI have joined to create the Dubai Harvard Foundation for Medical Research to support training and research programs through HMSDC, as well as collaborative research programs around the world. The Foundation will be the mechanism through which DHCC attracts philanthropy as well as private and governmental funding for developing leaders in science and medicine in the region.
