Educational & Fellowship Initiatives:

Harvard Macy Institute

The Harvard-Macy Institute was created by Elizabeth Armstrong, PhD, and has been in existence for over 10 years. During this time more than 1,000 professionals from around the world have been trained in two Boston-based courses: Educators in the Health Professions and Leading Innovations in Healthcare and Education. In 2007 the Institute offered a third Boston-based course, Comprehensive Assessment in Health Science Education. These courses are developed with faculties from Harvard Medical School, Harvard Graduate School of Education and Harvard Business School.

The Educators in the Health Professions is a two-part 17-day course which is designed to enhance the professional development of physicians, basic scientists and other healthcare professionals as educators. In this program, educational leaders develop their own action plans for leading and managing change to fulfill their institution's educational mission.

The newest offering of the Harvard Macy Institute is the Comprehensive Assessment in Health Science Education program. In this program the participants will be academic faculty, health care educators and administrators who are engaged in the training of health care professionals and who are increasingly held accountable for the quality of their graduates and educational programs. During this course participants will design an assessment system for their home institution which integrates evaluation information at multiple levels and optimally informs a continuous quality improvement process to further their institutions’ educational missions.

Seminar in Global Health Equity

Dr. Robert Crone and Dr. Harvey Makadon are course directors for the Seminar in Global Health Equity. This student-faculty seminar explores a variety of topics with HMS and HSPH faculty who work in the field of global health. These topics include historical overviews and political analyses of global health and health inequalities; social justice and human rights perspectives on global health; political and technical responses of WHO, states, donor organizations and other NGO and IGO global institutions. Examples include studies that address problems of access, equity and quality in health systems; ethical issues in global and local medical practice and in medical missions and interventions. The topics include cases that address many of the major global health challenges of the 21st Century from diverse disciplinary perspectives. The seminar is designed for medical students who wish to pursue a concentration in Global Health. Course requirements include participation in discussion and analysis during seminars, drawing on assigned reading materials, plus a short research based essay or draft proposal for a summer project in the field of global health.

Harvard Medical School Dubai Center: Institute for Postgraduate Education and Research (HMSDC)

This institute established in May 2004, will be the center of Dubai Healthcare City's education activities. Currently, through the HMSDC, HMI fosters the development of postgraduate and continuing medical education (CME) programs designed to train specialty physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals, and bring updated knowledge and practices to the entire region. CME programs involving HMS faculty have focused on multiple disciplines including cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, respiratory disease, and issues of particular regional concern. HMSDC will be a focal point for scholarly exchange and academic programs between the region and the Harvard Medical community. In addition to providing and coordinating postgraduate education and establishing a center for clinical research, it will house a state of the art medical library and patient education center, and a simulation center for training healthcare professionals.

WHARF

In conjunction with Wockhardt, HMI formed the Wockhardt Harvard Medical International HIV/AIDS Education and Research Foundation. Its goal has been to train healthcare providers in India regarding prevention of HIV and care of people with HIV. This program has been funded by HMI as well as funding raised from the Goldsmith Foundation in the USA as well as Wockhardt Hospitals and diverse sources in India. As part of this program, WHARF disseminated the first Indian edition of HIV, a text on HIV care edited by Dr. Makadon at HMI and Dr. Howard Libman at BIDMC and published by the American College of Physicians. To date it is estimated that the program has trained nearly 13,000 health care professionals across India.

Accreditation and Medical School Development

HMI developed an modularized “accreditation” tool for the establishment of new medical schools. It has been adapted and expanded  the tools from HMI's work in multiple countries and international organizations. The resultant process consists of an on-line self study tool to be completed prior to a HMI site visit; a site visit by the HMI team which includes meetings with all stakeholders and visits to the facilities and clinical sites; a preliminary presentation of the findings; a posting of these findings on-line for review and comments; and a final report. The final report includes definitions of the various elements of the review; best practices; strengths, concerns, deficiencies and recommendations.

Educational & Fellowship Initiatives

HMI faculty is engaged in a broad scope of teaching activities that span Harvard Medical School and its affiliated institutions. These activities include individual HMS courses, clerkships, graduate medical education and continuing medical education. Harvard Medical International is instrumental in several medical education exchange programs, mentorship programs, observerships and fellowship programs. Sample programs included:
