    • Develop leadership in medical education
    • Develop a system to support research and development in the life sciences and health care
    • Create an environment that supports both high-quality health care delivery and the well-being of families

Shared Values
DHCC has invited Harvard Medical International (HMI), Harvard Medical School (HMS) and many others to partner in the development of Dubai Healthcare City. All DHCC partners share the goals of creating patient-centered care, of making healthcare accessible to all and of creating and nurturing a community of professionals. DHCC and its partners are committed to cultivating people to form a strong healthcare infrastructure which will sustain development for the long term.

  • Q: What is Harvard Medical International?
  • A: HMI is the international division of Harvard Medical School. HMI's role at DHCC is to build the infrastructure for education, research and quality management systems. Since 1994 HMI has been involved in over 50 projects in over 40 countries. HMI's guiding philosophy is that no citizen of the world should have to travel outside of his or her own community to access quality health care.
  • Q: What advantages do HMI and HMS bring to Dubai Healthcare City?
  • A: Harvard Medical School is made up of over 8,500 faculty representing almost every country in the world. All initiatives within DHCC will have access to these experts, as well as their global network of faculty from academic institutions around the world. Relationships with 18 Harvard-affiliated hospitals, as well as HMI's associated centers around the world, offer opportunities for training and education to augment DHCC-based initiatives. In addition, Harvard medical faculty can serve as a catalyst for building expert teams within DHCC.
  • Q: Why is DHCC important to HMI/HMS?
  • A: HMI is pleased to be invited to take part in DHCC because of the opportunity to work in Dubai with local faculty and experts from around the world to develop new models for health care delivery and medical education and research, while instituting quality management standards and practices to guide continuous improvement that ensure patient satisfaction.
  • Q: How will DHCC ensure high-quality healthcare delivery?
  • A: In order to ensure that the health care providers who locate in Dubai Healthcare City provide high-quality health care, DHCC sought to establish a quality assurance infrastructure to guide continuous improvement throughout DHCC. The Center for Healthcare Planning and Quality (CPQ) is a joint DHCC-HMI initiative designed to provide quality management training and tools to help tenants within and outside of DHCC adapt global best practices.
  • Q: What is the role of HMI/HMS?
  • A:
    • HMI and DHCC have developed a quality management and licensing organization called the Center for Healthcare Planning and Quality (see above) to ensure patient safety and continuous quality improvement throughout DHCC. This includes setting standards for quality of care, training people within DHCC in quality management, and supporting mechanisms for monitoring these standards.
    • HMI and HMS will provide education programs for professional development across the full spectrum of medicine. The first DHCC education program was Practi-Med Dubai 2003, which attracted more than 1,200 physicians, nurses, allied health professionals, and students to hear about advances in disease diagnosis, prevention, and treatment.
    • HMI and HMS have established the Harvard Medical School Dubai Center Institute for Postgraduate Education and Research
  • Q: What is the Harvard Medical School Dubai Center (HMSDC) Institute for Postgraduate Education and Research?
  • A: Postgraduate medical education is the means by which doctors train to become specialists, such as heart surgeons. The HMSDC is the first Harvard postgraduate medical institution outside of Boston. This Center is an opportunity to foster the development of a cadre of leaders in academic medicine and research who will constitute the professional workforce and intellectual resources of Dubai Healthcare City, and ultimately the region. The HMSDC will be affiliated with the academic medical center planned for DHCC, which will be the site for many of the training and research programs conducted under the auspices of HMSDC.

HMSDC research programs will be conducted in collaboration with Harvard Medical School and leading academic centers around the world. The programs will be a means of training and developing scientists and of contributing to medical innovations to improve healthcare.
